Abortion

Abortion is a medical procedure that removes the fetus from the uterus. There are different types of abortion women can choose from. However, the options available to your situation will be determined by how far along you are into the pregnancy. During the first trimester, you will usually have the option of having a chemical (pill) abortion procedure or a surgical abortion procedure. Chemical abortions are only available up through nine weeks gestation.

At Aid to Women Center, our providers highly recommend receiving a free ultrasound as you explore your options. This is important to ensure you are receiving the quality evaluation that you deserve. An informed patient is an empowered patient and leads to better health outcomes and minimizes financial, physical, emotional, mental, and social side effects that often accompany an abortion. The ultrasound will help you to determine:

  • The location of my pregnancy
    • chemical and surgical abortions DO NOT affect an ectopic pregnancy. ectopic pregnancy could lead to the rupture of a fallopian tube and heavy bleeding. An undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy can result in infertility or death, if treatment is not provided in a timely manner.
  • Is my pregnancy viable?
    • approximately one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, generally before 28 weeks (World Health Organization). Why abort if you are miscarrying? Let us follow your care through miscarriage for free.
  • Accurate pregnancy dating. Know your gestational age.
    Risk with mail-in, no care abortions.
    • Gestational ages approaching or exceeding 10 weeks (70 days) present a higher risk for incomplete chemical abortion, as efficacy decreases as the pregnancy progresses. Using the abortion pill after this timeframe or without verifying gestational age increases the likelihood of retained tissue. (American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology)
    • Second trimester abortion carries a risk for live birth (American Journal of Obstetrics Gynecology) the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) found that 11.2 percent of second-trimester induced abortions result in a live birth.
